At least eight people were killed and more than 200 injured in the unprecedented violence in Sri Lanka that erupted after supporters of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked the peaceful anti-government protesters. The angry mob burnt down the ancestral home of Rajapaksa in Hambantota. Dozens of buses, cars and some government structures were set ablaze by the protesters in several parts of the country. Sri Lanka is going through the worst economic crisis that led to acute shortages of staple food, fuel and power. Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post hours after his supporters attacked anti-government protesters. The authorities have imposed a nationwide curfew and deployed troops in the capital to deal with the situation. The protesters have launched a demonstration in front of Sri Lanka's Trincomalee Naval Base after reports emerged that former Prime Minister Rajapaksa and some of his family members were leaving their official residence in Colombo.
