Farmhouses, cars and crops burnt to ashes as wildfires ravage southern Europe

The wildfires sweeping southern Europe has engulfed more than 70,000 hectares in Spain so far this year. The heatwave intensified the deadly wildfires that burnt thousands of houses, cars and other properties. According to a report, last month, a huge wildfire in Sierra de la Culebra, Castille and Leon, ravaged about 30,000 hectares of land. Now, the wildfires are moving north, including towards Britain where authorities issued an extreme weather warning. This summer, much of Europe is baking in a heatwave due to climate change. The temperatures are hovering mid-40s Celsius in some regions, with wildfires raging across tender-dry contryside in Portugal, Spain and France. Authorities are leaving no stone unturned to control the wildfires. Thousands of firefighters are working day in, day out to extinguish the conflagration. In EI Pont de Vilomara in Catalonia, evacuees organised a protest outside a civic centre. Among them retiree Onofre Munoz, 69, said that his home and van had been completely destroyed by the wildfires. "We bought the van when I retired and now it's totally scorched. We have nothing. Our house had quite a few windows, they exploded, and a powerful flame came inside. We knew it yesterday afternoon because we got some pictures in which we saw everything had burned."
