Several people were injured as the clashes broke out between police and the protesters in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The police personnel used water canons and fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. According to reports, hundreds of students, who were carrying black flags, marched on Colombo's central Fort area, chanting slogans against the government. Sri Lanka is going through a tough time as its economy has hit rock bottom. The fuel and food shortages have triggered violent protests across the country. Angry protesters set the houses of several politicians on fire. The crisis has come from the confluence of the COVID-19 pandemic battering the tourism-reliant economy, rising oil prices and populist tax cuts by te government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksha and his brother, Mahinda, who resigned as Prime Minister last week. Sri Lanka's agriculture sector was also devastated by the ban on import of chemical fertilisers.
