​Afghan Taliban marks two years in power amidst global concerns and local grievances​

On August 15th, the Taliban celebrated the second anniversary of their capture of Kabul, claiming the establishment of nationwide security under an Islamic regime. Their rapid takeover in August 2021 came as U.S.-led foreign forces withdrew following 20 years of war. As the Western-supported Afghan forces collapsed, President Ashraf Ghani fled. Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, congratulated the nation and emphasised the importance of thanking Allah for the "victory". While the Taliban assert that the country is experiencing unprecedented peace, the U.N. has reported multiple civilian attacks, some by the Islamic State, the Taliban's rival. The situation for Afghan women, who previously enjoyed significant rights under Western-backed governance, has deteriorated. Amina Mohammed, U.N. Deputy Secretary-General, emphasised the bleak turnaround for women's rights since the Taliban's return. Kabul observed the anniversary with tightened security. Locals and Taliban supporters participated in street gatherings and parades. Sayed Hashmatullah Sadat, a resident, expressed joy over the Taliban's expulsion of Afghanistan's enemies. Official departments, including the education ministry, held events emphasising the Sharia-driven Islamic system. However, not all sentiments were positive. Maryam, a 27-year-old tailor, expressed dread over the anniversary, recalling the traumatic takeover two years prior.
