Severe cold wave conditions disrupted normal life in the Kashmir Valley as the harsh winter period of 'Chillai Kalan' began on Monday. Dal lake and some waterfalls in the region have frozen. Long icicles hung from leaking taps and branches of trees. According to the weather forecast, over this period, the night temperatures is expected to drop several notches below the freezing point while the maximum temperatures hover around 6-7 degrees Celsius. The Chillai Kalan has importance for Kashmir as the snowfall during this period replenishes perennial water reservoirs in the Valley and Ladakh. The flow of rivers, streams, springs and lakes during summer depends upon how bountiful has the snowfall been during this 40-day long period.
