Heavy downpour disrupted normal life in Kolkata, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas of the city. Most of the main roads, streets and houses were submerged in the rainwater. People were seen wading through the water across the city. The rainfall also disrupted flight operations and caused waterlogging in the operational area of Kolkata airport. According to a media report, no flight could land at the airport between 1.12 pm and 1.52 pm on August 2 due to the rain. “During the time, 16 flights which were scheduled to arrive, could not land. At least one flight had to be diverted,” said the airport official. The heavy rain had reduced the visibility which caused the delays in landing. The Met department said that Dum Dum received 70mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Tuesday. While talking to a newspaper, a Kolkata airport official further told, "Because of the Metro construction, most of the drainage systems have been choked which is affecting the flow of rainwater. Our civil engineering officials are looking into the problem. They will hold talks with the Metro authorities and we’ll discuss the issue on Wednesday."
