In a shocking and brazen incident, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead by assailants in Prayagraj on the night of April 15, 2023. The incident took place in the presence of the police and the media, while the brothers were being taken for a medical test to Colvin hospital. According to reports, Atiq and his brother were handcuffed when they were taken out of the hospital, and a group of journalists were talking to them when three youths joined the group. Suddenly, one of the assailants pointed a pistol at Atiq's head and shot him at point-blank range, while the other two opened fire at the brother. Both the brothers died on the spot. Atiq Ahmad, a former Member of Parliament, had several criminal cases against him, including murder, extortion, and kidnapping. Moreover, the incident took place on the day Atiq's son Asad was laid to rest in Prayagraj after being shot dead in an encounter in Jhansi on Thursday. The police have launched an investigation into the incident and have arrested the assailants.
