Angolan model Maria Borges was born on October 28, 1992, in Luanda, Angola. Her siblings raised her during the Angolan Civil War. In 2013, Borges was named Forbes Africa Magazine's top model. She was discovered in 2010 during Angolan edition of the contest Elite Model Look, where she was placed second. Borges signed with Supreme Agency, and a month later she made her debut with 17 runways in the fashion week. She was a Givenchy exclusive In the second season. Borges has appeared in editorials for British, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese Vogue, French Numèro, V, W, i-D, Interview, German and Australian Harper's Bazaar, Brazilian Marie Claire. She is the first African woman to feature on the cover of the American version of ELLE in 2017, after Sudanese model Alek Wek in 1997. From 2013-2017, Borges has appeared in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
