Fashion icon Anna Wintour’s love for perfection goes beyond editorial

Born on November 3, 1949, in Hampstead, London, Dame Anna Wintour DBE is a British-American journalist, editor-in-chief of Vogue and artistic director for Condé Nast, Vogue's publisher. Known by her perfectly styled pageboy bob haircut and trademark black Chanel sunglasses, Wintour says her sunglasses serve a purpose beyond fashion, "I can sit in a show, and if I am bored out of my mind, nobody will notice. At this point, they have become really armour." She has become the most influential figure in the fashion world for her eye for fashion trends and her support for younger designers. Anna's love for fashion began at a very young age. Wintour said "Growing up in London in the Sixties you would have to be walking around with Irving Penn's sack on your head not to realise that something extraordinary was happening in fashion. The look of the girl then and everything that was going on then, the pill and the emancipation of women and the end of the class system, just seeing that revolution go on made me love fashion from an early age." She came into the industry at the age of 15 when her father set her up with a job at the London clothing store Biba. She was later hired as a first editorial assistant at Harper's & Queen where she began her career in fashion journalism. In 1988, Wintour became editor-in-chief of British Vogue who is known for revolutionising the fashion industry. She is also a chairwoman of the New York Metropolitan Museum that hosts an annual fundraising gala, 'Met Gala'. Anna Wintour's involvement has turned the glamour affair into one of the most high profile events of the year. Wintour has a reputation of being stone cold and intimidating that earned her the nickname 'Nuclear Wintour'. She says, "I don't think of myself as intimidating. And I assure you that all the people who work for me on a day-to-day basis don't think that either. I think that's just something that's been fabricated by certain elements of the media and once something is out there, particularly in today's world, it just gets exaggerated.
