Lootera: Vikramaditya Motwane got inspired after reading O Henry’s short story ‘The Last Leaf’ and decided he wanted to adapt it into a film and that is how 'Lootera' was born.

Aisha: This movie starring Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel 'Emma.'

Omkara: We all remember this Saif Ali Khan and Ajay Devgn starrer which gave us characters like Kesu Firangi and Langada Tyagi. This film is based on William Shakespeare's tragic play 'Othello.'

2 States: This is another movie based on Chetan Bhagat's book that has the same title. The film talks about the love story between two people belonging to completely different cultures.

Maqbool: This is a crime drama film that was released in 2003 starring Irrfan Khan and Tabu as main leads. The film was directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and it is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy 'Macbeth.'

Haider: 'Haider' is considered to be one of the best films of Shahid Kapoor. The movie received maximum number of awards the year it was released. No wonder it is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's famous tragic play 'Hamlet.'

3 Idiots: This film is based on Chetan Bhagat’s famous book ‘Five Point Someone’. The film went on to become a major success and is one of the top few movies on everybody’s must watch list.

Kai Po Che: 'Kai Po Che' is yet another movie based on Chetan Bhagat's novel. This film is an adaptation of the book ‘3 Mistakes Of My Life’. Seems like Chetan Bhagat’s novels are inspiration for many filmmakers.

7 Khoon Maaf: The film is an adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s book 'Susanna's Seven Husbands.' It is essentially a short story but when Vishal Bhardwaj saw that there was potential for it to be adapted into a major motion picture, he requested Bond to further develop the story.

Noor: This Sonakshi Sinha starrer was greatly inspired by the work of a Pakistani writer Saba Imtiaz. ‘Karachi You’re Killing Me’ was the inspiration behind the movie 'Noor.'
